"I grew up in a low-income, single-parent household. Our family's weekly routine consisted of trips to Second Harvest Food Bank, digging through neighborhood trash bins for recyclables to sell, and temporary jobs for extra money. Growing up worrying about money was difficult, and I can't even imagine how much harder life would have been without a home to live in. During difficult times, my family appreciated all the help and support we got from our community, family, and friends. No matter how small or big the help was, it gave us hope during a difficult time. In a similar way, I want to do the same for the local homeless community. It doesn't take much to cause a person to become homeless. It could be unemployment, mental illness, or family instability. I understand that life is unexpected and difficult, so I want to encourage others to remain resilient. I want to help those going through a difficult time to understand that they are worthy, cared for, and not alone." |
