Our Projects

Empower Yolo

opportunity house

Empower Yolo is a shelter housing survivors of domestic violence
and abuse. Members of HOPE engage children in educational
and arts & crafts activities. We also ensure that the children have the
necessary resources to complete their homework and provide tutoring services.
Opportunity House is Vacaville’s primary and only homeless shelter that promotes self-sufficiency. Members of HOPE visit once a week, planning visits with workshops or activities of 3 main categories (1) Professional Development & Finance (2) Mental Health (3) Education. We collect feedback from the same residents and use them to cater future visits to their needs and interests.

Showers Program

Interfaith RotATING WINTER SHELTER (IRWS)

The Showers Program is hosted by the UC Davis Athletics Staff who are willing to open up the Women’s Locker Rooms to provide free access to showers people experiencing homelessness in Davis. As volunteers, we work closely with staff to ensure that guests were safe and provided additional hygiene products for guests to use. After two years of operation, the showers program was put “on hold” by UC Davis administrative offices. HOPE members worked with the UCD Athletics Staff to garner support for the program. This proved to be successful as the Showers Program is now once again up and running every Sunday.
The Showers Program is currently suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions.
The Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter is an emergency shelter hosted by various churches throughout Davis during the winter season. Members of HOPE handed out hygiene brochures, assisted with food prep and serving, and chatted with guests during the meal to gauge any needs within the population

hope annual benefit concert

For the past three years, HOPE has hosted a Benefit Concert in the spring in order to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding homelessness in the Davis community. This concert has included panels of guest speakers, performances from UC Davis and local groups, and highlighted poetry/artwork from members of our community. Unfortunately, we were unable to host our Benefit Concert in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but we look forward to future events!

Fresh cuts, Fresh Starts

Our first Fresh Cuts, Fresh Starts event occurred on Sunday, October 23rd, 2018 in coordination with the City of Davis Police Department and Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. We collaborated to host an event in Downtown Davis in order to provide free haircuts, lice checks, housing resources/information, free food, and toiletries to the community members of Davis. Over twenty shelter and low-income housing residents received haircuts at our event.

mobility fair

On March 8th, 2020, HOPE hosted our first-ever Mobility Fair with the purpose of providing transportation and mobility resources, donated clothing, and free food to local community members. Some of these free resources included shoes and socks, bike gear, and Unitrans bus passes. Students from Samuel Merritt University also taught attendees about basic first aid and foot health.
